Description

Trade the city for the real Zambia on this full-day journey into the heart of Mumbwa! Begin with a pickup from the Protea Hotel Cairo Road in Lusaka, setting off as the city is still stretching awake. Settle in for a scenic drive along the Great West Road, passing open skies, roadside villages, and the slow, satisfying feeling of leaving the tarmac of routine behind. Arrive at the Mumbwa Open Market and dive into its colour, sounds, and smells: pyramids of tomatoes and oranges, sacks of groundnuts and dried fish, fabrics, music, and lively chatter. Walk through with your guide, meet the vendors, and learn how a Zambian market really works. Pick up a snack or a small souvenir while supporting local traders directly. Next, take a short drive to the Mumbwa Caves Heritage Site, a protected National Monument cared for by the National Heritage Conservation Commission. This is one of the most important archaeological sites in south-central Africa, sheltering humans across the Middle Stone Age, Later Stone Age, and Iron Age. Excavations here, first led in the 1930s by the famed Raymond Dart and later backed by the Leakey Foundation and National Geographic, uncovered ancient hearths, built windbreaks, and traces of early pigment use, among the oldest signs anywhere of humans thinking like us. Walk among the towering rock walls, step into the cool hush of the main cave, and stand exactly where people stood, lit a fire, and made tools tens of thousands of years ago. Your entry fee is included. Continue to the Kalilwe Hot Springs, hidden in a ribbon of lush green forest. We set up a simple, beautiful bush coffee station right at the water's edge. Enjoy a hot cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea in your hands, your bare feet dipped into the naturally warm spring water, and nothing but birdsong and running water around you. The spring itself is too hot for swimming, so this is a moment to simply slow down, and to keep your eyes on the far bank, where wildlife often comes down to drink. Next, head to OC 95 Restaurant for a relaxed, sit-down Zambian lunch. Refuel, recharge, and swap stories about the morning before the most special part of the day. In the warm afternoon light, visit Katala Village, where you'll be welcomed not as a spectator but as a guest. With your guide translating and bridging, meet villagers, sit and talk with them, and, at the invitation of a local family, step inside their home. See how a rural Zambian household really lives day to day: how meals are cooked, how the home is kept, how children play, and how a community holds itself together with very little but a great deal of heart. Your visit directly supports the family and community who open their door to you. As the sun softens, begin the drive back toward Lusaka with a full heart and a camera full of memories, arriving at your hotel in the early evening, tired, happy, and already planning your next adventure with us.
